What are Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Symptoms?


PTSD is a mental health problem caused by various traumatic events. Those events may threaten a person’s security or create an emotion of helpless situation.

For instance, people who experience an overwhelming life difficulty may trigger PTSD, particularly when such event is unpredictable or uncontainable.



Moreover, PTSD can affect people with terrible and catastrophic experiences such as emergency workers, law enforcement officers, war negotiators and mediators.

The mental health problem develops in a different way from one person to others. It can happen to friends, and family members who are facing and /or going through trauma. The traumatic events that trigger the PTSD are varying; it can take weeks, months and years before these events appear.

There are different events that may cause PTSD:

  • War experience
  • Rape
  • Sexual abuse or harassment
  • Car accident/crash
  • Childhood negligence
  • Physical Abuse
  • Physical or emotional assault
  • Kidnapping
  • Sudden death of loved one
  • Natural disaster

PTSD Symptoms


People with PTSD may experience distress panic feelings and flashbacks caused by traumatic events.

A person with PTSD will experience three kinds of problems:

1.Re-experiencing the painful event associated with unwanted frequent memories and intense nightmares. This may bring up some emotional or physical reactions.

2. Sleeping problems and lack of focusing become constant leading to unusual and signs of dangerous acts.

3. Escaping from memories, people, thoughts, places that trigger traumatic events. This may lead to lose interests to do daily activities and avoid interacting with family members and friends. This usually called (dissociative experience).


Research studies show that most cases with PTSD develop more problems such as:
  • Anxiety, 
  • Depression, 
  • Alcoholic and drug misuse
